Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How do I know if a meld card is legal?
A: When evaluating a meld card for legality in TL:R, we only look at the front face. The back is ignored when considering Mana Value, Color Identity, or any other considerations.
Q: How does Partner/Background work?
A: As long as both cards in the Command Zone can be partner/background pairs and individually meet deckbuilding restrictions you can use partners/backgrounds. If you play with more than one commander, you start the game with a forced mulligan.
Q: Can I change my Commander between games/matches?
A: No. The configuration your deck is in at the start of the event is locked in. You can swap cards between your 49 and sideboard, but your Commander(s) can never change.
Q: Can I use cards with X in the casting cost?
A: That depends. When evaluating a card for format legality, we look at the mana value with X=0. If the card has MV<4 with X=0, then it’s fine.
Q: Can I use Adventure cards?
A: That depends. When evaluating a card with Adventure for format legality, we ignore the mana cost and value of the Adventure. Look only at the cost in the upper right corner of the card.
Q: How do I determine Mana Value of double-faced cards?
A: This is a bit tricky to answer cleanly. First, cards that Transform, Convert, Disturb, or Meld don’t apply in this scenario as the Mana Value is the same for the front (meld cards combine the value of both front halves). The only time we can consider the back side is for Modal Double Faced Cards (such as the spell lands from ZNR or Valki/Tibalt). Look at both sides. Each side must, independent of the other, meet both the Mana Value restriction and color identity of your Commander(s).
Q: How many colors can I play?
A: There is no rule limiting colors aside from finding a Commander that meets deckbuilding restrictions. If you can find a card that can be your Commander that is all five colors, you can use it.
Q: Can I use a Companion?
A: Yes. Your companion must meet all deckbuilding requirements in the TSMCR, and your deck plus Commander(s) must meet the Companion restriction.
Q: Can I use Split Cards (such as Fire//Ice)?
A: When evaluating a split card, a card with Fuse, and cards with Aftermath, add the total Mana Value of each “half”. For example, Fire//Ice is a 4 Mana Value card. Each “half” is MV 2, so the card is MV 4. Similarly, Driven//Despair would be calculated the same way. By the same calculation, Wear//Tear is legal as the card has a MV of 3.
Q: How do I determine Color Identity?
A: Color identity is all the colors found in the Mana Cost, Rules Text, and any Color Indicators. Basically, anything besides reminder and flavor text. For double-faced cards, be sure to check the back side for rules text and color indicators. Important to note, however, the back of meld cards is always ignored except when the cards are melded.
Q: How do I know if I can use a flip card (such as Erayo, Soratami Ascendant)?
A: When evaluating a flip card for format legality, we only look at the “default” characteristics. We ignore any characteristics of the “flipped” permanent.
Q: Does having multiple Commanders affect my mulligans or starting hand?
A: Yes, if you have more than one, you start the game with a forced mulligan.
Q: Can I use digital only cards or cards updated through Alchemy?
A: No. TL:R is a paper format, so if the card isn’t available in paper, it can’t be played. Additionally, all cards are assumed to have their Oracle text, which can be found on Gatherer.Wizards.Com.
Q: How does the forced mulligan for more than one commander work?
A: You still draw an opening seven, but before you decide to keep or not you put one on bottom. This counts as your first mulligan of the game.
Q: Can I use Serum Powder on the forced mulligan?
A: No. Without getting into the nitty gritty of the rules, since the mulligan is forced and you don’t get to make a choice, Serum Powder can’t replace that mulligan. It can be applied to a future mulligan.
Q: How does Urza's Bauble work?
A: Your hand is always known to you. When a player “looks” at a card, it's the same as a one-sided reveal. However, this doesn't change the fact your hand is still your hand. When an opponent looks at a card in your hand, you're both looking at it together. Additionally, the game of Magic is intended as a physical tabletop game, so it would take a lot of rules and/or rules text to keep the card a secret (definitely involving “secretly” and/or “face down”).
